This is a point of the territory with a prodigious coast: its cliffs, the immensity of the beach, the dune system, the estuary and its spectacular lagoon shape, are all of them an important part of this coastline. In addition to their scenic beauty, these natural elements have great relevance for the maintenance of biodiversity. A great variety of flora and fauna live here, especially birds, which visit this area every year during their migratory periods. That is why this coast is protected by the ZEC – Costa Ártabra (Special Conservation Area). A Frouxeira beach is a Special Protection Area for Birds, the Costa de Ferrolterra – Valdoviño SPA. Likewise, the sandy area and the lagoon are recognized within the Ramsar Convention, as it is a wetland of international importance as a habitat for waterfowl.
The mix between the coastal landscape and the inland landscape happens here, in the Valdoviño fault, that arises in the Prados inlet and crosses a good part of the Galician territory. This fault is considered a Site of Geological Interest (LIG) given the extraordinary outcrop and deformation of rocks that can be observed on the surface. The fault divides Galicia into two parts perfectly differentiated by their predominant materials: slate prevails in the upper part, while granite abounds in the lower part.
Through this street painting, the artist, Doctor Toy, captured the richness of the territory on the side wall of the Valdoviño town hall. Its warm colors bring us closer to a sunrise in this place, which we can be observed with a “duck’s eye”. Accompanying the flight of this pair of ducks [Anas platyrhynchos] that presides over the mural, you will be able to observe the wonders of this area through their eyes. The force of the sea that beats on the coast, the ruggedness of its cliffs, the richness of the sandbanks, its geological diversity and the adaptation of living beings in this surprising territory, are transmitted in each brushstroke of this artistic intervention, which caused the admiration of the neighbors in the area.
